Recent study od Caulerpa taxifolia (Chlorophyta) settlement at Malinska, Croatia (North Adriatic Sea, Krk Island)
The Caulerpa taxifolia settlement was monitored monthly, from October 1997 till January 1999, outside the Malinska waterbreak (Krk Island, Northern Adriatic Sea). The number of fronds ("leaves"), total fronds and stolons lengths, and algal standing crop were calculated per square metre. These results were compared with previous measurements in the Malinska harbour. At present the alga covers an area of about 3000m2 and affects approximately 10000 m of the surrounding sea bottom. It grows on sandy bottom mixed with shells at a 4-15m depth. Between the Caulerpa patches the Zostera marina and Cymodocea nodosa shoots spread sporadically.. Marked variations in algal growth and canopy covering were noted between two study sites. Overall, at the end of winter and during spring, Caulerpa "leaves" began to necrose progressively and algae kept hidden. In summer months, green fronds and stolones renewed from old necrose algal fragments.
