Sažetak:
Objective: To evaluate the psychometric properties of the Croatian translation of the PedsQL 4.0 and PedsQL Diabetes Module and to identify relationships between different aspects of coping strategies (Problem solving, Avoidance, Expressing feelings, Social support-friends, Social support- family, Cognitive restructuring, Distraction) and different aspects of health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in children with type 1 diabetes. Method: The sample consisted of 199 schoolchildren: 47 patients with type 1 diabetes and 152 healthy children and adolescents. Children health problems were rated with PedsQL 4.0 (Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory- Generic Core Scale) and with PedsQL Diabetes Module. Coping strategies were measured with SUO- The Coping Strategies Inventory for Children and Adolescents that measures the frequency of coping strategies in response to stressful events. Results: Acording to results all subscales of Croatian versions of PedsQL 4.0 and PedsQL Diabetes Module showed satisfactory reliability in terms of internal consistency with the majority of scales exceeding a Cronbach α of 0, 70. Significant correlations were found between coping strategies and different aspects of HRQOL and those correlations were higher in girls than in boys. Expressing Feelings, Avoidance and Seeking for social support from friends were consistently correlated with lower quality of life in girls with type 1 diabetes. The findings of the present study suggest that child psychologists and clinicians treating children suffering diabetes should adress coping strategies related to specific helath-related problems and assist them in developing more effective ways of coping.
