Effect of Socioeconomic Status on Croatian Students' Educational Achievement: the Example of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA 2006)

Drawing from the PISA 2006 results, the authors intend to discuss the effects of familial socioeconomic status (SES) on students' educational achievement in Croatia. PISA is the international collaborative project carried on by OECD member countries and partner countries/economies. The research is conducted in three-year cycles, starting from 2000. Croatia joined the project in 2006. The Croatian part of the research included 168 schools, making the sample of 5.242 15-year-old Croatian high-school students. The introductory part of the paper describes some general information on PISA research, its methodology, characteristics of the Croatian sample and relevant instruments and indices for measuring SES. In the Croatian sample, SES proved to be an important predictor of individual educational achievement, a trend well documented in foreign researches as well. The authors will analyse the effects of parents' education, occupational status and family income, specific family possessions (e.g. art works, books and other educational resources), monthly familial investments in education, etc. on educational achievement of students. The authors will also provide some national regional comparisons of the selected data. In the concluding part of the paper, Croatian results will be compared to the results of the other participant countries in the region (ex-Yugoslavia) and some relevant examples from the literature. Finally, the authors will discuss some possible consequences and policy recommendations.
