Miss Korčula or Bula

In September 2003 the gathering of prior and current bula was organised for the first time in Korčula. The purpose of this gathering was to reveal and compose a story of the invisible bula and their role in Korčula's Moreška. The gathering included 15 women who had actively participated in Moreška since 1944 to this day. The role and the significance of bula has not been researched extensively until recent times, although the bula is the key figure in Moreška, the symbol of good that moreškanti fight over in their sword dance. In the words of the bula performers themselves, regardless of the recognition by moreškanti, the bula is the key figure for which the mock sword combat is fought. Without the bula there would be no Moreška. This story of Korčula's bula begins with the revival of Moreška after World War Two and continues to the present day. My presentation is about the customs that accompany the role of bula, about the only one female teacher of the bula, the male teachers of new, young bula performers, the qualities that a girl must have to be selected as a bula, and of the so- called "tourist bula."
