Neural tube defects at autopsy in Croatia after the Chernobyl accident
In the period 1987-1995, 2446 fetuses and newborns underwent autopsy at our Department. In the same period there were 49126 births. Congenital anomalies of the central nervous system were found in 125 cases. Neural tube defects were present in 61 infants (27 male and 34 female). The frequency of neural tube defects (NTDs) was 1.2/1000 births. The most common type was anencephaly (found in 26 cases). Our study showed an increasing frequency of NTDs in the period after the Chernobyl accident in comparison with previously published data in our country.
