Influence of abatement of lead exposure on blood lead and ALAD activity
The phase-out of leaded gasoline in many countries has resulted with substantial decrease of blood lead concentration (BPb) in general population worldwide. The aim of this study was to asses the effect of Pb abatement measures in Croatia on BPb and delta-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (ALAD) in blood, as ALAD activity is the most sensitive indicator of early Pb-effect. BPb and ALAD activity were measured in 252 Croatian men, 20-65 years of age, with no known occupational exposure to metals. Data obtained in 2007-2008, after the ban of leaded gasoline in Croatia in 2006, are compared with similar data collected in 1981 and 1989, when the concentration of Pb in gasoline was 0.6 g/L. Our results showed a highly significant (p<0.001) decrease in BPb from 114.5 ug/L (46.0-275.0 ug/L) in 1981/1989 to 30.3 (3.2-121.0) ug/L in 2007-2008, and an increase in ALAD activity from 49.8 (24.9-79.4) EU in 1981/1989 to 60.4 (25.2-86.0) EU in 2007-2008. Although this 17.5% increase was not as dramatic as the BPb decrease (73.5%), Pb abatement seems to have produced an impact on ALAD activity in general population. However, because there is no threshold below which the adverse effects of Pb are not experienced, efforts should still be made to further reduce Pb emissions worldwide.
