Return Migration: The Changing Faces of A Field of Study
I propose to discuss manifold attributes of the concept: “ unproblematic” , ” natural” , “ impossible” , “ evasive” , “ ambivalent” , “ complex” , “ blurred” , etc. return, and, in particular, a once- prevailing syntagm of “ the myth/ideology/illusion of return” (which arose in the context of labour migrations in Europe following WWII). These various conceptualizations of the term point to dominant approaches and research paradigms within the study of migration, to political agendas, as well as to the human dramas that had to be theoretically addressed (such as, e.g. the surge of refugees after major African or Southeast European crises and the subsequent repatriations).
