Biochemical markers, including serum paraoxonase and arylesterase activities, related to an educational group programme of relaxation exercise in patients with syndrome X
Rogulj The study group consisted of 17 male patients. Eight men (group A) attended an intensive educational group programme with relaxation exercise, while nine men (group B) had only conventional counselling. Both groups were on weight-reducing diet. After three months, the body weights decrease about 7% in both groups, but the waist to hip ratios remained unaltered. In group A, HDL-cholesterol increased on average about 30%, triglyceride and haemoglobin A1C levels decreased about 40% and LDL-cholesterol decreased 20%. In group B, the HDL- and LDL-cholesterol levels were unaltered, while triglyceride and haemoglobin A1C levels decreased 20-30%. Mean paraoxonase activities increased 11% in group A, but arylesterase activities in group A and both enzymes in group B remained unaltered. The results of this pilot study seem to indicate that the intensive educational group programme had a beneficial influence on some, but not all, markers relevant for the treatment of syndrome X.
