Gifts and tears

The article analizes vigorous contacts and exchange of cultural influences between the Christian and the Islamic zones in Dalmatia at the early modern times. The Dubrovnik archives, especially, give us ample data about the character and the kinds of gifts that had to shower upon all levels of the Turkish bureaucracy, from the Balkan hinterland to the sultan himself.
