High-risk delinquents and their attributions of delinquent behaviour
Objective: This presentation explores differences in attributing delinquent behaviour between low-risk and high-risk delinquents. Method: The research was conducted on a sample of 335 juvenile delinquents in Croatia. Self-report measure was used and juveniles answered to which factors they attribute their delinquent behaviour. Delinquent Attribution Scale that was administrated was specially constructed for the purpose of this research. Results: Results show that juveniles attribute their delinquent behaviour more to internal factors then external, and that high-risk delinquents attribute their criminal behaviour to more factors than low-risk delinquents. Results by self-report are in accordance with risk / need theory of delinquent behaviour. Juveniles perceive many risk factors they have been exposed to in their life. Conclusion: Juvenile delinquents can be a very useful source of information about their perspective on causes of their delinquent behaviour, but further analysis and research will explore the possibility of behaviour prediction with the constructed Scale.
