Quality of sibling relationship, depression and life satisfaction in an age heterogeneous sample of adults
Background: This paper reports some results of a wider study that was aimed at exploring the quality of the sibling relationship and its associations with subjective well-being indicators in an age heterogeneous sample of adults. Methods: A total of 229 Croatian adults (35 - 72 years) completed a questionnaire package including the Adult Sibling Relationship Questionnaire, and instruments aimed to assess various aspects of personal and interpersonal functioning including depression and life satisfaction. Findings: The results showed that the quality of adult sibling relationship is most closely related to the depression. Specifically, depression scale correlated negatively with eight ASRQ scales referring to the warmth dimension of the sibling relationship (e.g. intimacy, affection) and positively with scales assessing the conflict dimension (e.g. dominance, competition). As expected, life satisfaction was positively associated with the warmth dimension of the sibling relationship. Discussion: This findings support the notion that various qualities of the sibling relationship are important to one's well-being during adulthood.
