The Effects of Intergroup Contact on Implicit and Explicit Attitudes toward Elders
The goal of the research was to determine the influence of intergroup children-elders contact on implicit and explicit attitudes of elementary school girls and boys. The total of N=78 participants (average age of M=13.7 years) was included in the research. Implicit attitude were assessed with Implicit Association Test (IAT ; Greenwald and al., 1998). To determine explicit attitude, bipolar adjectives (good-bad, beautiful-ugly) were used, and the participants assessed how well these adjectives describe elders on the scale of 1 to 7. With the form of self report, the quality and quantity of children-elders and children-grandparents contact was determined. No difference was found between the girls’ and boys’ attitude nor the type and quality of contact. Different effect of intergroup contact on implicit and explicit attitudes was determined.
