Implicit and explicit attitudes toward the elderly

Age is one of the first characteristics we notice about other people. However, age categorization research has received little attention. Also, little research has been conducted to study attitudes (and prejudices) toward old people especially on children's samples. Therefore, the objective of this study was to measure implicit and explicit attitudes toward old people and to explore the relation between implicit and explicit measures. A total of N=78 elementary school girls and boys (average age of M=13.7 years) were included in the research. Implicit attitudes were measured using the Implicit Association Test (IAT ; Greenwald and al., 1998) which was used to assess automatic evaluations of elderly as opposed to younger people based on the response latencies. Explicit attitudes were assessed with Multiple Response Attitude measure (MRA, Doyle i Aboud, 1995). Although both implicit and explicit measures revealed a general preference toward young people in relation to older persons, we did not find that these two measures of attitudes were related. These results are consistent with previous research on adult participants.
