The influence of the mother's adjustment to life on the child's initial academic achievement
Mother's adjustment to life influences the child's development. The aim of this research was to explore the connection between maternal adjustment and the child's early academic achievement. The research sample consisted of 101 first grade pupils (age 6 - 7) of Zagreb primary schools and their mothers. The mother's adjustment to life was determined as a set of variables covering various aspects of adjustment: life satisfaction ; perception of economic difficulties in the family ; social support, education and involvement in child's education ; household furnishing ; environmental enrichment: and language stimulation. Academic achievement was determined by the average school grades in the second part of the first year in mathematics, language arts, and general success. The results show that those components of mother's adjustment to life that correlated with child's early academic achievement are: mother's education ; involvement in the child's education ; mother's life satisfaction ; household furnishing ; and environmental enrichment. There was no significant relationship between mother's perception of economic difficulties and social support. The influence of mother's adjustment to life on the child's cognitive development is cumulative. The children of better-adjusted mothers have an advantage from the very start of their life. It is a two-way, interactible relationship: child's progress makes the more satisfied, more involved and stimulation, and vice versa, i.e., the children of mothers with poor adjustment tend to be poor school achievers, which leads to lower life satisfaction in the mother.
