Palpita (Margaronia)unionalis Hubner and Phloeotribus scarabeoides Bern. - Olive pests population increase in Dalmatia
The bark beetles (Scolytidae) are the most destructive insect pests in coniferous forests and also fruit trees. Three species have been recorded as olive tree pests in Croatia: Hylesinus oleiperda F., Leperesinus fraxini Panz. and Phloeotribus scarabeoides Bern. (Langhoffer 1915, Novak 1952, Karaman 1971). Among the Scolytidae, the olive bark beetle (Phloeotribus scarabeoides) is considered as one of the main xylophagous. It is one of the principal pests in the present days causing direct and indirect damage on the yield. The first data of this insect in Croatian olive orchards was recorded eighty years ago (Vrsaljko1924, Novak 1928) and was the secondary pest of local importance thanking to the population level. The result was no investigation about its behaviour what means no papers. It has been considered as one of the main olive pest that occurs in the olive orchard regions of the poor karst soil. The aim of this research was to study biology caracteristices in relation with enviromental conditions. The pieces of woody cutting from 1 to 6 cm in diametar and 30 cm in lenght, as traps for pest cycle monitoring and density measurements, were used. The results schowed the olive bark beetle had one generation mainly per year. There were also differences in attractiveness of woody cuttings in relation of their diametar.
