On the reliability of residual stresses determined using the hole drilling method
There are number of problems involved in calculating stresses from measured strain relief. The major calculation problem is high senstivity to strain measurement error as the depth from the surface H increases, and hole depth increment ÄH decreases. In order to obtain stress uncertainty values within preset limits the depth increment distribution used in calculations must be altered. The problem of optimizing the step distribution employing the Integral Method was considered. Schajer was the first to report that three or four depth insrements of variable size are the practical maximum. Vangi and Zuccarelo have calculated 4 or 8 depth increments respectively. In the foregoing papers, the analysis was restricted in total hole depth h/R<0.3 (R is the mean gage radius). The second theoretically acceptable calculation procedure, the Power Series Method, in attempting to obtain reliable results, describes that only linear stress fields can be calculated. In this paper, a procedure for obtaining error parameters from a series of experiments is described. Conceptually, this investigation is focused on extracting a maximum amount of useful information from the data on hand without the benefit of being able to repeat the experiment with more or better equipment. In addition, since the hole drilling measurements involve a variety of techniques and parameters, the approach of combining estimates of error obtained by using different models is not very reliable. Therefore, the present study concetrates on the overall error estimation for the particular measurement procedure.
