Relation between Health Status, Social Support and Cognitive Function in Old Institutionalized People

The aim of this study was to determine the association among health status, social support and cognitive function in old institutionalized people. A group of 558 participants aged 60 96 years, mobile and not diagnosed with dementia was recruited from a longitudinal research. Health status was measured in terms of self-perceived health and objective health, determined by reported chronic conditions. Social support was measured as the quantity and frequency of different types of social support. Cognitive Function Scale of the Clifton Assessment Procedures for the Elderly was used for measuring cognitive function. Results showed different correlations between health status, social support and cognitive function. Results suggest that higher cognitive function has positive association with increased social support and is correlated with health status in ways consistent with available knowledge. Implications of this study emphasize that life-style management should provide social activities for elderly to promote a better quality of life.
