Self-reported Life Satisfaction of Elderly People in Northwest Croatia

As the population od elderly people in Istia, as well as worldwide, continues to grow, studying the needs and quality of life in elderly has become a top priority of health care strategies. From a multidimensional approach, health comprises, amongst other factors, successful mental and social functioning, as well as overall life satisfaction. In this study life satisfaction was examined in people aged 60 - 90 years (averagae age: 70.7 years) in the County of Istria. The following groups of variables were examined: socio-demographic, health-related and activity-related. There were 452 examinees included in the study, comprised of 202 men and 250 women from 12 communities in Istria - grouped according to community size: villages, smaller towns and one larger town. A questionnaire on needs, quality of life and life satisfaction was administered to individuals. Results shoe greater satisfaction in eldrly with a higher level of education, in elderly that assess their SES better than other people, in elderly that live in smaller communities, and in those that don't live alone. Concerning health, higher life satisfaction is found in elderly that don't suffer of any illnesses. Higher satisfaction is present in more active elderly persons - those that go to church and keep themselves busy with housework, gardening, grandchildren and animals. The results can be used as a starting point for the creation of intervention programmes that address maintenance or improvement in life satisfaction among elderly, as a measure of health care, in this growing population.
