Photocatalytic behavior of sol-gel TiO2 films
Sol-gel TiO2 films were prepared and investigated as a catalyst in the photocatalytic degradation of diazo Congo red dye in aqueous solution. TiO2 solutions were prepared with and without the addition of polyethylene glycol (PEG). The morphology and composition of the films were determined by the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with EDS detector. Crystal structures of TiO2 were identified by the X-ray diffraction (XRD) method. The addition of PEG to the TiO2 solution resulted in the change of the ratio of anatase-rutile crystal structures of TiO2. The TiO2 film prepared with PEG is characterized by a lower amount of rutile phase and a higher amount of anatase phase of TiO2. Photocatalytic activities of TiO2 films, irradiated by UVA radiation, in the process of degradation of the commercial diazo textile dye Congo red (CR), used as a model pollutant, were monitored by UV/Vis spectrophotometry. The kinetics of the degradation of the CR dye were described by the Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) kinetic model.
