About the dangers of taking a closer look. The toxic species Pseudonitzschia calliantha discovered in the northern Adriatic

Routine phytoplankton monitoring in Croatian coastal marine waters is traditionally restricted to light microscopical methods. This leaves many particularly small species, or species with only little interspecific morphological variability only to be determinable to a group level. One example are the two groups Pseudo-nitzschia seriata group and Pseudo-nitzschia delicatissima group. Both together comprise more than twenty, partly toxic, (cryptic) species. Monitoring those groups on a species level not only is desired due to the potential harm those groups impose towards human health. As the grouping of those species introduces a large uncertainty about the occurrence of single species, it also introduces a high noise into ecological dataset. Hence also the understanding of the dynamics and ecology of the potentially toxic species within the abovementioned groups as well as the monitoring for invasive or globally distributed species relies on a species resolution in plankton monitoring data. The first closer looks into the routine monitoring samples from northern Adriatic waters revealed already the first toxic species and demonstrate the need for a higher (species) resolution in routine monitoring. We here report about the detection of Pseudo-nitzschia calliantha, in the northern Adriatic and the according ecological data.
