Associations Between Physical Activity and Health-Related Quality of Life in General Population

Background: From the public health point of view, it is important to determine the relationship between physical activity (PA) and health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Purpose: To determine the relative contribution of physical activity in different domains (work, domestic, transport, and leisure-time) to HRQoL. Methods: Sample consisted of 1076 randomly selected Croatians. In order to assess PA and HRQoL participants were face-to-face interviewed using International Physical Activity Questionnaire(IPAQ) and Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36), respectively. We adjusted PA and HRQoL for demographic and lifestyle variables. Results: Multiple regression analyses showed a significant relationship between PA and Physical Functioning, Bodily Pain, Social Functioning, Mental Health, and physical summary component score in male participants and Vitality, Mental Health, and mental summary component score in female participants (explained variance ranged from 2% to 4%). Positive relations to HRQoL were determined for leisure-time PA, whereas inverse relations were determined for transport and domestic PA. Conclusion: These evidences support hypotheses that it is unjustified to study relationship between total PA and HRQoL without considering domain specific PA level and that only leisure-time PA has important role for improving HRQoL.
