After the WW2, need for new residential buildings has rapidly increased all over the Europe. Combining the craft knowledge of masonry building and new building techniques in reinforced concrete, engineers have combined their efforts and created the new essence of the cities. Almost 60 years later, most of these buildings have either reached the point of state where their usability is questionable, or due to poor maintenance need to be retrofitted. Although each of these buildings is unique and each has, during the time, created its weak point, by retrofitting the engineers have only one aim: to set and prepare those old buildings to meet living requirements for several upcoming generations. This article presents an overview of commonly used retrofitting techniques including several proposals of strengthening methods.
