STRUNA: National Croatian LSP Term Base Creation - challenges and lessons learned
Development of Croatian Special Field Terminology (STRUNA) is a program financed by the National Foundation for Science, Higher Education and Technological Development of the Republic of Croatia. It started in 2007 at the initiative of the Croatian Standard Language Council and is being carried out at the Institute of Croatian Language and Linguistics chosen to serve as the national coordinator. The aim of the project is to ensure the necessary prerequisites for collection and standardization of Croatian terminology for various subject fields and professional domains. In the broader sense the objective of the program is to lay the foundation for a more articulate national terminology policy and more structured education in this field. The paper deals with the experiences gained in the first phase of the project, during which a terminology database had to be developed and numerous methodological issues resolved. They range from efforts to comply with the international terminology standards to solving specific needs of highly differentiated special field terminologies as well as obstacles in the attempts towards harmonization across various domains – monolingually and multilingually.
