Energy Recovery from Municipal Waste – Contribution to Sustainable Development of Croatia
The paper focuses on the segment of energy recovery from municipal solid waste in Croatia. The state waste management strategy is based on the mechanical and biological treatment of waste in the future waste management centers. Left over after the treatment is waste that can be used as fuel (e.g. refuse derived fuel, RDF). RDF can be used as a substitute fuel in cement kilns and thermal power plants as well as in dedicated waste-toenergy plants. Starting from the geographical distribution of the waste generation (quantities and transport distances), taking into account the costs of collection, transfer and thermal treatment, recommendations on optimal number and size of the plants as well as the choice of the possible locations for the future waste-to-energy plants in Croatia are given. Second part of the paper examines opportunity of the cement industry in Croatia to utilize ash from thermal treatment of waste in the process of the cement production and the RDF as a substitute fuel.
