Sertraline: a novel antidepressant with broad treatment spectrum

The work is an overview of the tretment spectrum of sertraline. Sertraline as one of the SSRIs, chemically is not related to others SSRIs, tricyclic, tetraciclyc or other antidepressants. In this article there are topics included: pharmacodynamics of sretraline, pharmacokinetics and metabolism of sretraline, clinical trials with sertraline, Sertraline in treatment of depression, Sertraline in treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder, Sertraline in treatment of panic disorder, Sertraline in treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder, Sertraline in treatment of premenstrual syndrome and premenstrual dysphoric disorder, Dosage of sertraline. In conclusion, it is concidered that sertraline has a favorable benefit/risk ratio and represents a therapeutic advance over many currently available antidepressants. The administration of sertraline is likely to improve the quality of life in depressed patientsby improving the depression, preventing recurrence and decreasing the risk of suicide, without many of the risks associated with tricyclic antidepressants.
