Influence of alcoholism on the prognosis of schizophrenic patients
The sampling included all schizophrenic patients hospitalised in the five years period (1 January 1994-1 January 1999)at Univerity Department of Psychiatry, Psychiatric Hospital Vrapče, Zagreb. All data were drawn from medical files of patients. Diagnosis were made on the basis of clinical psychiatric assessment, based on the ICD - 10 classification of mental disorders. From all schizophrenic patients hospitalised in the five years period at University Department a total of 186 (147 males and 39 females) patients with a dual diagnosis of schizophrenic disorder and alcoholism were examined. Various socio - economic , clinical and hospital characteristics were analysed. Results: Schizophrenic patients with the dualdiagnosis were often men, married, with a paranoid - hallucinatory disease form, were aggressive during examination and were without psychiatric aftercare or regular psychopharmacotherapy (p<0.01) ; they came from rural areas, had a mixed clinical picture with a deteriorating disease course and were less communicative and socially functional, and were without work, self - initiative and personal income (p<0.05). Conclusions: schizophrenic patients with codiagnosed alcoholism have poorer clinical, hospital, social and left prognosis and need longer hospitalization.
