Student's self-perception as a predictor of their depression symptoms and satisfaction with academic achievement

If we want empower the students and stimulate development of mature and competent practitioners, it is important to explore what kind of problems they are dealing with during their study. This paper emphasis problems with self-perception, setting personal goals, and achievement of their goals because we can presume that these components present basic traits in professional competences development for social sciences students. The aim of this research is to determine relation between student's depression symptoms and satisfaction with their academic achievement on one side and their self-esteem and perfectionism on the other side. It is expected that satisfaction with academic achievement will be in positive correlation with self-esteem and in negative correlation with perfectionism. Also, it is hypothesed that sel-esteem and perfectionism will be significant predictors of depression symptoms as well as students' satisfaction with academic achievement. The sample consisted of 151 female undergraduate students and first year graduate students age 19 to 32 (M=20, 93 ; SD=1, 900). Self-esteem was measured with the Self-Liking/Self-Competence Scale (SLSC ; Tafarodi i Swann, 1995), while for the measuring of perfectionism waas used the Positive and Negative Perfectionism Scale (PANPS ; Terry-Short et al., 1995). For the measuring depression symptoms it was applied Beck's Depression Inventory (BDI-II). Hierarchical regression analysis have shown that self-competence is the strongest predictor for satisfaction with academic achievement while the strongest predictor for depression syptoms is self-liking.
