Possible Approaches to the Reconstuction and Presentation of Bastion Fortifications in Croatia
Due to its specific geopolitical position on the border between the Habsburg Monarchy and Ottoman Empire, bastion-type fortifications were built in many towns in continental Croatia in the period from the 16th to 19th century. During the four centuries of their existence, the fortifications have been an important element of urban morphology. In the early 19th century, due to changes in warfare brought about by the modernisation of weaponry, bastion-type fortifications began to lose their function, which led to their gradual deterioration. In certain towns of continental Croatia, such fortifications were completely demolished during the second half of the 19th century and were transformed into central urban areas with concentrations of public buildings and public spaces. However, in some cities this transformation was not complete and the fortifications were preserved in their more or less original form. Unfortunately, during the 20th century, the majority of preserved fortifications fell into disuse, and were not properly maintained and presented as part of the urban heritage. The goal of this paper is to show possible approaches to the reconstruction and presentation of bastion-type fortifications in cities in order to preserve them from further deterioration and to make them integral elements of cultural identity.
