Higher heart rate is associated with decreased insulin sensitivity in patients with type 1 diabetes
In this study of a large cohort of patients with type 1 diabetes we provided the evidence that reduced insulin sensitivity is associated with higher heart rate in type 1 diabetic patients, and that heart rate is risk predictor of progression to insulin resistance. In type 1 diabetes sympathovagal imbalance and insulin resistance has been shown to confer an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Higher heart rate, associated with sympathovagal imbalance and lower insulin sensitivity, increase the risk of cardiovascular events and mortality in type 1 diabetes.
