Neurobiology of lower motor neuron
Lower motor neurons are the final common pathway for transmitting neural information from a variety of sources to the skeletal muscles. Ventral horn cells of the spinal cord are composed of three distinct nerve cell types in terms of cell body size, location and function. Large alpha motor neurons and medium-sized gamma motor neurons are mainly located in the lateral and medial nuclei whereas small motor neurons being distributed in the intermediate zone (dorsomedial portion) of the ventral horn. In my talk I will try to give a historical perspective on functional significance of these three classes of spinal motor neurons through the short description of classical works of Sherrington, Eccles, Carpenter, Verbova and others, and to discuss the importance of these discoveries in the context of contemporary research on lower motor neurons dysfunction in several selected neurological disorders.
