Bio-based materials – packaging for sustainability
Since the very beginnings of human activity, packaging has been one of the most essential demands. The function and presence of packaging is equally important today and from the point of graphic industry, packaging is considered the business of the future. However, the problem emerges in the attempt to place packaging into the framework of sustainable development. Environmental sustainability occurs here as a consequence, with potential problems arising from the choice of materials and techniques used. Bio-based packaging materials fit in the positive context of sustainable development (environmental sustainability). Bio-degradable packaging is fully sustainable, since it cannot become waste due to the degradation and decomposition properties of bio-degradable materials. Despite very strict sustainability requirements that it must meet, packaging may not lose the attractiveness and, most importantly, it must fulfil its purpose. Graphic design is stressed as the base that should support the principles of sustainability. The choice of appropriate materials and methods can provide a closed loop cycle, which mimics the natural bio cycle. Green design stands out as environmentally friendly design, which includes LCA- Life - Cycle Assessment, an assessment of environmental impact throughout all phases of product life cycle. The aim of this method is to reduce potentially harmful effects of production and/or products on the environment. Bio-degradable packaging fits into this concept as one of the most appropriate solutions.
