Using Chemical Indicators to Characterize and Determine the Impact of the Climate Change on Karstic Aquifer – Bokanjačko Blato the Testing Site of the CCwatreS Project

The investigated area is situated in northern Dalmatia and its part of the Dinaric karst region. It is located 4 km from the sea, and 1.5 km from the town Zadar. The Bokanjačko balto is typical karstic polje with the thick Quaternary pond and lake deposits. The catchment area of Bokanjačko blato consist of Eocene and Cretaceous karstified carbonate rocks, with deep and irregular karstification, and the preferential groundwater-flow paths (Ftitz, 1976). Estavella Jezerce and two wells at the pumping site are used for water supply of town Zadar and its surrounding settlements. The average yield of Jezerce is 140 l/s and wells B-4 - 50 l/s ; B-5 – 40 l/s. The climate of the Bokanjac catchment is determined by its latitude, the Adriatic Sea and the Velebit mountain range and to a lesser extent by the hinterland plateau of Ravni Kotari and the islands in the Zadar archipelago. During summer, it is under the influence of the subtropical zone. The impact of the sea on the climate of the Bokanjac catchment is mostly manifested through the cooling effect in summer, and in winter as an additional heat source, thus decreasing its coldness. According to the data from the period 1951-2009 statistically significant increase in the mean annual air temperature of 0.2◦C per decade is present since 1997 (Gajić-Čapka et.al., 2010). It is amplified within recent shorter periods towards the end of the first decade of the 21st century (Gajić-Čapka et.al., 2010). This is in accordance with observed regional and global warming. The annual precipitation anomalies show large interannual variability during the observed period 1951-2009 (Gajić-Čapka et.al., 2010). Linear trend shows a decreasing tendency i.e. a reduction with time over the Zadar region, but not statistically significant (Gajić-Čapka et.al., 2010). The contribution to the decrease in the annual totals comes from the small reduction of seasonal precipitation totals in winter, autumn and summer (Gajić-Čapka et.al., 2010). Using the measured chemical indicators (chloride, EC values, temperature, nitrate) was able to evaluate the impact of climate change on water quality of monitored wells and spring. According to the measured chemical indicators from the period 1995-2010, it was observed that the concentrations of chloride, EC values, nitrates and temperature of the water are rising at Jezerce. Chloride and nitrates concentrations are below MPC values. At the wells B-5 and B-4, the EC values are rising, wile NO3- concentrations are decreasing. Water temperatures at wells are stagnating.
