Since independence in 1991, Croatia has experienced difficulties in navigating the transition from its socialist past towards the ideal of a developed Western European country. Written by senior and up-and-coming academics and experts, this book offers analysis of the contemporary development challenges Croatia faces from a socio-cultural perspective: crucial demographic changes, the labour market structure, reconfiguring higher education, struggling with its parochial status in international knowledge production, obstacles to the career advancement of women in a patriarchal society, the impacts and consequences of the socio-cultural context, and value models reconstructed from catering establishment names. The breadth of approaches is meant to help fill the gap in academic literature and contribute towards better knowledge about this country which may be a young state but a centuries-old nation. |
