The Sibling Paradigm and the Structure of Desire in Marivaux and his Modern Reworkings
The article discusses the ways the French playwright Marivaux anticipated the rule of the sibling paradigm in the modern ways of love-making and their social, cultural and political implications. Some modern cinematic reworkings of his dramaturgical philosophy - Abdellatif Kechiche's "L'esquive" in particular - are also discussed, since they corroborate the long-standing interest Marivaux managed to incite, and which is here attributed precisely to the fact that his plays could easily figure as specimen stories for some reworkings of psychoanalysis which go beyond the "Oedipal theatre", such as those authored by Rene Girard and Juliet Mithell.
