Signal detection efficiency in two different experimer situations
It is well known that signal detection efficiency falls in time, whi has been attributed to different factors by various authors. Broadbe & Gregory (1963.) attributed this to the changes of observer criterion, while Mackworth & Taylor (1963.) argued that it is causf by the changes in sensory discrimination. Signal detection can r investigated by the use of so called YES-NO procedure, which thought to assess changes in sensory discrimination and changes i the eriterion, while foreed choice procedure assesses sensor discrimination, only. The aim of this study was to find out possible differences in signa detection parameters obtained by the two procedures. Ten subjects took part in this investigation. When YES-NC procedure vas used subject's task was to inspect a matrix 12x6 B anc 13 alternatively changing characters and to find the signal, which wa~ an omitted 13 character. The subject had to mark the signal by pressing a button on the mouse. If he thought that the signal was not present he had to click on neutral icon. The signal probability was 0.5. The detection time was limited to 2100 ms. When forced choice procedure was used, two identical matrixes would appear on the screen one of which was with the signal, and the other one without. The subject's task was the same as in the first situation. The detection time was limited to 3000 ms. Each subject had 600 trails in YES-NO situation, and 300 trails in forced choice situation, which meant that the signal was presented 300 times in each situation. The results showed that sensory discrimination declined in time, while average detection time, as well as average time of correct detections, significantly increased in time, in both experimental situations. Subject's criterion did not change significantly during the course of time.
