Venetian urbanisation of Dalmatian towns in the fifteenth century
In the period from 1409 to 1420, Dalmatia, a province stretching from the island of Krk to the island of Korčula (nowadays Croatia), became part of the Venetian territory in the Eastern Adriatic. In this paper I will discus how built environments of Dalmatian cities expressed their ties with Venice in the fifteenth century. I will present work-in-progress in four case studies: Dalmatian cities of Zadar/Zara, Šibenik/Sebenico, Trogir/Traù and Split/Spalato in the first decades after the conquest. The question also deals with the elements and stages of “Venetian urbanization” and its participants at all levels. Here I intend to present the general state of research in this area, highlight the most interesting recent work, and point out where the major challenges and opportunities for future research lie.
