Characteristics of youth and susceptibility to peer pressure
The purpose of this chapter is to review the contribution of adolescents’ individual characteristics in explanation of susceptibility to peer pressure. Taken together, current findings suggest that boys and girls who are more susceptible to peer pressure show higher levels of emotional problems, e.g. anxiety and depression. As a result, they have more difficulties developing healthy secure relationships with others, which in turn leads to higher social anxiety (i.e. fear of rejection and abandonment) in peer relations, and lower global self-worth.
