Reinke's crystals in perivascular and peritubular Leydig cells of men with cryptorchidism - stereological study
Leydig cells, responsible for the production of testosterone, are situated within the interstitium of human testis. Depending on their position, there are two types of Leydig cells: peritubular and perivascular. Both types produce Reinke's crystals which composition and function are not well known. The aim of this research is to investigate the number of Reinke's crystals in men (age 20 to 30) with cryptorchidism in perivascular and peritubular group of Leydig cells. Results of the study indicated a higher number of crystals in perivascular cells (in the both control and cryptorchid group). Moreover, when control and cryptorchid specimens were compared for the presence of the crystal, the higher number of Reinke´s crystal was recorded in cryptorchid testes. The exact molecular composition of crystal’s microfilaments still remains unknown.
