A Stable Isotope of Organic carbon in Makirina Bay (Central Adriatic)
The isotopic composition (d13C) of sedimentary organic carbon in surficial sediment (peloid) from Makirina Bay varied from 13.10 to 24.90 %o. The organic carbon isotopic composition of terrestrial plants from the coastal area showed d13C ni the range between 12.04 to 30.68 %o, while that of aquatic plants and algae ranged from 7.14 to 17.88 %o. Using the differences in d13C values between marine and terrestrial organic matter and considering that the phytoplankton is relatively unimportant, the origin of sedimentary organic matter in surficial sediment was estimated. For determination of marine and terrestrial contributions to sedimentary organic matter a simple mixing model was used. The percentage of terrigenous organic matter in surficial sediment ranges from 4-69 %. The terrigenous isotopically light fraction is much higher (30-69 %) in the southern part and in the coastal area of Makirina Bay, while in the central part of the Bay, where the isotopicaly heavier aquatic plants and seagrass prevail, the percentage of terrigenous fraction is much lower (4-30%).
