Maltreatment of children through false sexual abuse alegations during divorce

It is known that divorce is highly stressful event in a family, but there are some occasions when it can be traumatic, especially for children. Children are often exposed to different types of maltreatment during divorce, and sometimes used to accuse a parent of sexual abuse, in order for other parent to get custody. In our study we included 147 children who came to our centre because of suspected sexual abuse, and we divided them into three groups concerning the marital status of their parents: divorced, not divorced, during divorce. When comparing these groups it was found that there is statistically significant difference between them concerning the percent of the children with diagnosis of sexual abuse in the sense that there is significantly more false accusations when the parents are in the middle of custody battle /X2=14, 455, df=4, p<0, 01/. 73% of the children who came because of suspected sexual abuse, and the parents were in the middle of divorce, were found to not be sexually abused, but were diagnosed as children with difficulties because of disturbed relations between their parents. In our poster we will present some of the challenges that we encounter in protecting and treating such children.
