Safer Internet – prevention of violence against children through the Internet.

In 2004 Brave phone in cooperation with the Center for Child Protection in Zagreb conducted research about children’s experience while surfing the Internet. Results indicated that most children (28%) are always or sometimes alone while surfing the Internet and only 4% of children surf the Internet under parents control. Twenty-seven per cent of children have been exposed to messages with sexual content. Further, 27% of children who answered the questionnaire indicated that they would go to meet a stranger alone without any supervision. Based on these results, Brave phone started to implement the project Safer Internet - preventing violence against children through the Internet. The focus of Safer Internet is to inform and consult children about safe and positive ways of surfing the Internet. It also involves parents with dilemmas about how to act in case a child is exposed to violence on the Internet or how to set up the rules for surfing the Internet. The main goal of the project is to provide adequate and practical information for children and parents about safe ways and methods for surfing the Internet and effective ways of protecting children from violence on the Internet, using group work and individual counseling. The project includes distributing brochures (especially a brochure on children on the Internet and a flyer on the Internet) intended for children, parents and professionals who work with children. The results of these activities are awareness of the children and their parents about available resources, improved protection of children from abuse, modified children’s behaviour towards using contemporary mass media, especially the Internet, an increasing number of children who feel protected and safe. Children and parents are also informed about places where they can obtain experts help and support.
