Efficiency of the Multidisciplinary Team Working with Abused and Neglected Children,

The objective of this paper is to review the efficiency of the multidisciplinary approach in the Center for Child Protection of Zagreb. The Center for Child Protection of Zagreb, provides help to psychotraumatised children, including abused and neglected children, as well as those at risk for maltreatment. Aiming at better protecting children, and because of the very demanding and serious nature of the direct work with traumatized children, it is important that this method of work be permanent within the structure of the health system. One of the main features of experts' work in the Center is the specialized multidisciplinary approach. That is why, in order to verify the general aim of this paper, the following problems will be considered: - determine the abused and neglected children prevalence in the total number of cases (N=4800) in the Center ; - define the characteristics of abused and neglected children who were included in the treatment in the Center (developmental and socio-demographic characteristics, characteristics of psychological functioning, simpthomatology, psychopathological deviations and needs), as well as the forms of the help provided ; - Examine the differences, according to defined characteristics, between the abuse and the children who were not abused and neglected. Statistical analysis shows that, so far more than 70% of children have been included in the multidisciplinary treatment. The majority of the children witnessed family violence and were emotionally abused. Then there are children who were physically and sexually abused and finally, there are those who were neglected. Also, it has been proven that more than 50% of the children who were in the multidisciplinary treatment experienced some form of abuse. Results will be interpreted in the light of multidisciplinary diagnostics and treatment of the abused and the children who were not abused.
