Sažetak:
Objectives: To assess whether there is a relationship between father’s chronic combat-related Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) present 15 years after the war, mother’s symptoms of secondary traumatization, and emotional and behavioural symptoms in their offspring. Methods: Seventy war veterans with PTSD, their spouses, and their school-aged children were included. The PTSD symptoms in fathers’ were assessed using the Clinician- Administrated PTSD Scale (CAPS). Secondary traumatization in spouses was assessed using the PTSD Checklist - Civilian Version (PCL). Emotional and behavioral symptoms in offspring were indirectly assessed by the mothers using the Child Behavior Check List (CBCL). Results: In our sample we could not establish significant correlation between the fathers’ combat-related PTSD symptoms and indirectly assessed emotional and behavior symptoms in offspring. However, there was a significant correlation between symptoms of secondary traumatization in mothers and the presence of symptoms in the offspring. Conclusion: These results suggest that mother’s secondary traumatization due to a veteran’s war trauma may affect psychological health of their school-age offspring.
