A comparision of the attitudes of mothers of nonhandicapped children and of mentally retarded children towards their child and their relatoion to the school behaviour of the child
We examined the relationship between children's behavior at school and their mother's attitudes toward them in interviews with 357 mothers of nonhandicapped children and 93 mothers of mildly retarded children. The nonhandicapped children's behavior was also assessed by their teachers. In the nonhandicapped children, emotional components of mother's attitudes were related to their assessment of children's academic achievement, while motivational components were associated with assessment of general behavior. For the handicapped children, the relationship between school behavior and maternal attitudes was less clear, suggesting that maternal attitudes toward these children were less related to academic achievement.
