Objectives: In two experiments we sought to explore the pattern of attention engagement in patients with IBS and IBD versus healthy control. Methods: Participants were 93 persons, 29 with a clinical diagnosis of IBS, 32 with a diagnosis of IBD, and 32 healthy persons as a comparable group. In the first experiment, we employed the global/local paradigm where participants are required to identify the target letter at either the global or local level of visual analysis. In the second experiment, we used the visual search task where participants are asked to indicate whether the target letter was present or not in an array of distractor letters. Results: Results showed that IBS and IBD patients exhibit a lack of typical global precedence effect that was found in the control group which means that IBS and IBD patients are more inclined toward visual details. Also, analysis revealed that there is no difference in the search times of the target letter among groups but IBS and IBD patients exhibit a greater overall level of accuracy compared to the control group. Conclusions:Taken together, obtained results imply altered attention functioning in IBS and IBD patients consistent with their heightened anxiety and/or chronic pain.
