CULTURE of Danube salmon (Hucho hucho L. 1758)

Introduction Danube salmon, Hucho hucho L. is freshwater fish which originally inhabited Danube basin within 18 countries. However, Danube salmon have been in decline for many years due to industrial and urban pollution. This species is now found in only small parts of its original range. Material and methods This research was made on brood stock captured in river, during the reproductive season in April by electro fishing. Eggs and sperm were stripped on the spot and brood fish were returned to the water. Eggs and sperm were taken to a fish hatchery, where fertilization was carried out (Fig. 1). Subsequently, fertilized eggs were incubated and hatched using conventional salmonid technology. Incubation of eggs from fertilisation to sprawning was 330 od, and average weight of aveline was 95 mg (Fig.2). After the fry absorbed about two-thirds of their yolk sac, they were transferred from the incubators into the outdoor basins. Feeding started after yolk sac was completely absorbed, with commercially prepared food for salmonids. Fry (Fig. 3) was fed ad libidum 8 times a day in the beginning, and later 2 times. Health monitoring of larvae, fry and adult fish was included and comprised clinical, parasitological, bacteriological and virological control. Results Health status of harvested fry and mature Danube salmon was stable during rearing period. Physico chemical properties of water were within optimal values for salmonid fish. During farming period of 2 years fish obtained average weight of 400 g. On the base of obtained results in our study it could be concluded that Danube salmon is ideal fish for commercial farming, as well as for reintroduction in its former habitat.
