Attaining body memory by dance technique

Many dance forms are made of their dance technique. Standardization of individual dance forms is in particular visible in their techniques which thus become a way of preservation, transmission and cultivation of these forms. The product of practicing dance techniques is not only dancing but also the body that takes over the expressed habitus, that is, a "hosted" shape of the dance form it practices. Work on the body through acquisition of a dance technique is a stake, effort and an attempt at creating certain physicality that always comes with a very specific goal. By practicing a technique, that is, exercising, bodies accumulate information. Settling ensured and enabled by a technique will, over time, like a memory, ensure different movement. In other words, body remembers a technique ; it has embodied memory and recollection. I will try to illustrate the extent to which impacts of body memory are visible in dance practices through dance techniques using the example of dance improvisation. Improvisation, as a non-structured component of dancing is a part of every form of dancing. A distinction between smaller or bigger proportion of improvisation in dancing will be made and explained together with more or less set conditions within which improvisation occurs differentiating between improvisation in standardised (mostly choreographed) and improvisation in non-standardised (non-choreographed) dance forms.
