Photoinduced H-abstraction in homo- and protoadamantylphthalimide derivatives in solution and in organized and constrained media
Photochemical reactivity of homoadamantylphthalimide 5 and protoadamantylphthalimides 9 and 10 was investigated in solution, in the β-cyclodextrine complex, and in the solid state. The triplet excited state of 5, 9 and 10 was characterized by laser flash photolysis (LFP). Sensitized irradiation in the solution gives rise to polycyclic products via a higher excited triplet state, not detectable by LFP. The direct excitation of 5, 9 and 10 gives, in addition to the products arising via a triplet state, cleavage products probably via a singlet state. Complexation with β-cyclodextrine changes regiochemistry of H-abstraction. In the solid state, 5 and 9 are photoreactive, wherein 5 gives only one product selectively, and 9 gives the same product mixture as upon irradiation in the CH3CN solution.
