Computational Mechanics of Discontinua and Structures in Distress
Numerical modeling has gone a long way since its humble beginnings a few decades ago. The progress is due to many factors including: (a) ever increasing need for predictive capabilities in various branches of science, engineering, and industry ; (b) ever increasing affordability of high performance computer hardware (in only a couple of decades a jump from unaffordable single processor computers to parallel desktop machines costing hundreds of dollars has been made) ; (c) ever more sophisticated computational solvers, methods, and algorithms being developed. Computational simulations of discontinua have greatly benefited from these to the extent that in the last decade alone modeling of discontinua has played an important role in diverse fields of applications spanning from nanoscience to engineering, and even medical sciences. In the process a completely new discipline called Computational Mechanics of Discontinua has been born. In this paper applications of various solutions of Computational Mechanics of Discontinua to problems of structural engineering are presented. These include impacts, blasts, fire, progressive collapse, seismic loading, ductility and micromechanics of material damage, and energy dissipation mechanisms under transient dynamic loading.
