Mechanisms of solid-state reactions and kinetic isotope effects
Since dimerization and dissociation of aromatic nitrosobenzenes has been observed in crystals and polycrystals1, the system can be used as a model for the detailed study of solid-state reaction mechanisms2. By using 15N isotope labeling, we demonstrate that the mechanical treatment of nitroso dimers induces their dissociation to the corresponding monomers, and recombination to azodioxides. Such an exchange of monomer units was studied for different nitrosobenzene derivatives and compared with similar reactions in freshly sublimed cocrystals, in solid melts, and in solution. Additionally, the kinetic isotope effect is measured for the first time for the solid-state chemical reaction.
